Institute
The Sarnath International Nyingma Institute’s mission is fourfold:
- to sustain the roots of the Dharma;
- to advance the study of classical Buddhist languages;
- to empower the transmission of the Dharma;
- and to promote interdisciplinary collaborations.
These four pillars: roots, study, transmission, and collaboration, create the possibility of bridging not only the East and West, modern and traditional thought, but also help to create the bridge between contemplation and action, resulting in a path of goodness in the world. Inaugurated in the winter of 2013, and blessed with the planting of a sacred sapling of the original Bodhi Tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, the Institute is the fruit of decades of cultural and religious preservation work carried out by our founder, Tarthang Rinpoche.
“To live simply, yet heroically, neither discouraged by the magnitude of the world’s suffering, nor disheartened by the seeming aloneness of the work, is to rest joyfully in an open heart, ready to serve the needs of other spontaneously, naturally, effortlessly, and perfectly. The activity of caring is a crowning jewel of what it means to be human.”
